Interview with Project 46 | TURN UP THE BASS

Canadian duo Project 46 made an enormous impact in the EDM scene this year!  From collaborating with Kaskade on “Last Chance” to being a part of Morgan Page’s unforgettable 3D tour, Project 46 are certainly making a splash!  Check out our interview with Ryan from Canada’s finest export Project 46!

Congrats on the #70 ranking on the Top 100 DJ list!  What’s your opinion about the list?

I think DJ Mag does a lot of good things for the scene and up and coming producers.  The publication of the list is really just a small part of what DJ Mag is about.  The results always get a ton of attention be it negative or positive. So, that really results in more labels, promoters, fans, and just a ton of new people finding out about us and hearing our music.  Really that’s the goal in the end.

I’m sorry you probably get asked this all the time but I have to ask about the love of pancakes!  Your new radio show is also called Pancake Radio?

I mean the pancake thing was just a big joke.  I wanted to do a free giveaway and call it freebie Friday or something.  Thomas then went on and posted on Facebook calling the giveaway Pancake Friday.  Pretty much telling me that if I wanted to do something stupid, to call it something really stupid.  It kinda back-fired and everyone loved it. So it became our thing by total accident.

I really like your collab with Kaskade “Last Chance.”  How did that track come about?

We had a basic idea for a track and were able to get it to Kaskade (which was lucky) and then before we knew it he hit us up on email.  That was a pretty surreal feeling.  He pretty much told us he had some ideas and we started plugging away on the track.  Months of back and forth resulted in “Last Chance.”

Do you have a dream collab?

Kaskade was it.  I mean in all honesty, Kaskade would have been the person we picked if you asked us two years ago.  Personally I’m a huge fan of Alesso, Axwell, and Calvin Harris.  So, maybe one day?

What do you love most about DJing/producing?

Well they are very different.  DJing and performing really allows you to see the result of all the hours in the studio.  I personally love knowing that our music touches people from all sides of the world.

You have a lot of loyal fans.  Do you have any that have gone too far, any obsessed fan stalker stories?

There are a few of those, LOL… I think we will keep them under wraps.  Don’t want to encourage more of this behavior haha.

What was your first EDM experience?

I think Thomas’s was a Kaskade show in Vancouver and mine was a Deadmau5 show in Niagara Falls.

Who were your biggest influences?  Who inspires you now?

At the time we got started together I would say people like Kaskade, Avicii, Alesso, and Axwell had a big influence in our music.  Now we really find our influence in so many different places, so it is hard to really narrow it down.

What would you guys be doing if you weren’t making music?

Well I was promoting EDM events and Thomas was working at Costco, both of us were just trying to pay the bills.  So, not too sure where we would be but probably a lot of the same.

What are your top 5 tracks at the moment?

Sick Individuals & Axwell ft. Taylr Renee – I am Nicky Romero – ID (Drums of Love) Hardwell ft. Matthew Koma – Dare You Armin Van Buuren ft. Trevor Guthrie – This Is What It Feels Like

Miley Cyrus – Wrecking Ball (Afrojack Remix)

Four out of five of these tracks are what we love, melodic progressive music with meaningful and emotional lyrics.  I am not a huge fan of the current big-room sound but that Afrojack remix is super dope.

Can you tell me about any upcoming collabs?

We have a big collab coming out in January, on January 27th to be exact.  We can’t really say much about it right now, but I can tell you he is a household name and someone we have always looked up to.

What’s next for Project 46?

We are just going to keep making music.  We hope to put out an album in 2014 as well.  I think you can expect a lot more music and shows!

The guys are on tour in North America at the moment!  Be sure to catch them at a town near you!
